Wellness in Remote Teams

The majority of our work is done remotely, which has many upsides. It gives us the flexibility to choose where and how we work, reduces the time spent commuting, and allows us to have employees from different places without them having to relocate. However, remote working can end up leading to its own issues, one of the biggest of these is the lowered rates of the casual socialisation that would naturally occur in a shared and physical office space, such as having lunch together or walking to meetings.

During Covid, many workplaces realised these issues were a factor in employee wellness, while video calls and a lack of a commute allow for a healthy work-life balance, research suggests that social connection is important for general wellbeing, making it something that remote teams need to actively consider.

Wellness and Activity Days

To help address these issues, we have begun hosting regular Wellness and Team Activity days.

These days are opportunities for us to step away from our usual routines and spend some time together through a variety of fun activities, such as meditation or sensory play. These days allow us to meet up with one another without any pressure from things like deadlines, giving us the chance to have conversations outside of the usual work related topics, connect properly, and enjoy one another's company. This is particularly valuable for those of us who live outside of London and cannot regularly meet with one another in coworking spaces. Bringing the team together regularly to socialise helps us to make sure that everyone feels connected.

SENSAS

On the 10th of June 2026, we had an activity day that had us take part in a sensory experience called SENSAS, which involved a variety of different challenges revolving around each of the five senses. The activities ranged from tasting mystery foods to exploring a laser maze, encouraging us to use teamwork and push ourselves outside of our comfort zones in order to get a high score on the challenges.

The majority of the challenges included us splitting up into two different teams that then had to communicate information to one another to piece together the answers to puzzles, this was a great opportunity for us each to try out different roles within the team.

One particularly interesting challenge had us identifying images underneath a light that simulated colourblindness, which turned out to be more difficult than anticipated, resulting in us having to check one another’s answers frequently, relying on each other’s knowledge when we were unsure of what we were looking at.

Socialisation

This activity day was well timed for me, as I had only just joined Register Dynamics, and so having this opportunity to get to know everyone in person in a fun and unique way allowed me to start to feel like part of the team. Until that point, many of the team were people I had only seen on a computer screen for meetings, and so meeting with everyone in person allowed me to connect with everyone much more.

Particularly, taking part in an activity that was outside the norm of day to day life allowed me to more easily take part in the challenges without feeling as if I were intruding on an already established dynamic, as we were all in a situation that we were unfamiliar with.

Conclusion

As a team, we are continuing to experiment with finding the best ways to make remote working work for us. In a traditional office, many ways that people support each other are often invisible as they happen through spontaneous moments such as passing conversations in the hallway, but in a remote team, more planning is required to create these moments. Wellness and Activity days are one of the many ways we attempt to do this, helping us to strengthen our relationships and improve communication and collaboration.
